Ah, September and change is in the air. Come on in to the shop to enjoy our ever changing inventory. You just never know what goodies you will find.

A new month means First Friday Fun--
This Friday meet local artist Diane Gadway with her unique line of re-purposed jewelry called Gadzoolry-- it's as fun to wear as it's name is to say.

And if that isn't enough-- we'll be sampling two new kinds of chocolate from Equal Exchange.

I've been waiting for the weather to be cool enough to get these shipped to us-- so there's a reason to be happy for a rainy, grey start to the week-- we get chocolate!

The new flavors are
Organic Ecuador Dark Chocolate-- a single origin bar from the Forteleza del Valle Cooperative in Ecuador-- it's sweet, fudgy and nicely balanced with hints of citrus and floral.
Organic Chocolate Caramel Crunch with Sea Salt-- crunchy caramel bits contrast with sea salt crystals-- my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Come down early so I don't eat it all myself.

It's back to school time and for many of us that means packing a lot of lunch boxes.... check out my latest blog post on Sustainable Lunches and start the year off living a bit lighter on the earth.

Summer Favorite       Rooibos and Mint Sun Tea
This has become a new favorite for the summer.
Place bulk rooibos tea (can also use tea bags), mint leaves, and lemon slices (can leave out or choose another fruit) in a glass jar and place in the sun — when the tea looks as dark as you like, strain it, ice it and enjoy. Will keep in the fridge for a couple days for a refreshing, healthy cool drink.

Do you love all things recycled? Just want to learn more? We're passing along the information below about the upcoming Master Recycler course-- it's FREE-- and such a cool opportunity.

BECOME A MASTER RECYCLER
For folks that are “gung-ho” about reducing waste and recycling more, here’s a great way to get the formal training you need to help make a difference in your community:   Become a Master Recycler through a class offered by the TriCounty Hazardous Waste & Recycling Program. Similar to the OSU Extension Service’s popular Master Gardener program, participants will attend a series of mandatory classes and field trips, and be required to volunteer at least 30 “payback” hours in their communities. The mission of the Master Recycler program is to “bridge the gap between awareness and action by motivating people to reduce solid waste in homes and workplaces.”

The classes are offered free of charge to residents of Wasco, Sherman and Hood River counties. Since starting last fall, the Master Recycler program has completed two rounds of training with 22 graduates currently completing their “payback” requirements. Their volunteer activities have included helping with waste reduction and recycling at schools, on-the-job and in child day care facilities; staffing booths at local farmers markets; marching in local parades; litter clean-ups; helping with a medical waste collection; helping at local hazardous waste collection events; and doing recycled art projects with children.

The Fall 2010 Master Recycler course will be held Tuesday evenings during September 14-November 2 at the Mosier Creek Terrace in Mosier. Being that it is officially mid-August, I'll quit kidding myself that I'll be getting a newsletter to you "any day now" and instead fill you in on the news this week.

Take Friday morning off-- the shop will open a bit late tomorrow. I'll be volunteering at the Columbia Gorge Peace Village in the morning and will open shop in the early afternoon.

An assortment of Klean Kanteens are back in stock-- kids sippy's and the new wide-mouth insulated varieties are the favorites this week.

Special Order Opportunities

Karen is planning to concoct a fresh batch of her Skin Happy Salve this month. The combination of skin healing herbs infused in olive oil, added to beeswax, shea butter and a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil results in a fabulous skin nourishing salve for all kinds of uses from rashes to small wounds and scrapes. This particular salve makes a great addition to your home first aid kit. Skin Happy tends to sell out fast so if you'd like a jar or two (2 oz. for $8) let us know!

Tropical Salvage

We're also planning a trip to the Tropical Salvage warehouse soon. Have you been thinking about adding a sustainably harvested, beautifully crafted, fairly traded shelf, bench or table to your household? Historically known as Camp 21, over 500 conscientious objectors were interned there for 5-6 years during WWII. Columbia River Fellowship for Peace is collaborating with the archival library at Lewis & Clark College to place a permanent commemorative sign on the historic spot.

Craft night postponed

The Ladies Craft night previously scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday the 21st will have to be postponed. Get out and enjoy your summer evening and we'll let you know when the crafty fun will be coming again. If the Ladies Night is even half as fun as the Kids Craft time was, we are in for a real treat.

Do come by the shop to check out our new summer items. We have gorgeous puppets and animal strings from India. And the long awaited shipment from the Tibet Collection should be in the shop by early afternoon on Wednesday. Come play the singing bowls and chimes with us.

Our partner this week, July 1st, is the Gorge Owned Business Network. Come shop on Thursday and we will donate 25% of total sales to help get this new project started.

The Gorge Owned Business Network is planning to become an affiliate of the national Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). BALLE has more than 80 chapters throughout the country. (see our earlier blog post)

The Gorge Owned Business Network will aim to advance Gorge-owned businesses with a commitment to maintaining a sustainable and prosperous community. It aims to serve Gorge-owned businesses as well as sustainability champions in non-Gorge-owned businesses and organizations who are committed to learning how to reduce their environmental impact, increase social capital in the community, and generate more profit while doing it. It is a program of the Columbia Gorge Earth Center, a 501.c.3 with a mission to promote the link between ecology, economy, and community in the Columbia Gorge (www.cgec.org). Recipe

Spiced Chocolate Oat Cookies

Ingredients:

    * 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    * 1/2 cup Equal Exchange Spicy Cocoa
    * 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    * 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    * 2 sticks unsalted butter
    * 1 tablespoon water
    * 1/4 cup turbinado or demerarra sugar (regular white will do in a pinch)
    * 1 cup light brown sugar
    * 1/4 cup molasses
    * 8 oz bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
    * 2 large eggs
    * 1 1/2 cups oats

Directions:

In a medium bowl, mix flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and ginger.

In the bowl of a double boiler, melt butter and water together. When butter has mostly melted, add sugar, brown sugar, molasses and chopped chocolate. Stir just until everything is melted; you don’t want the butter to separate or the chocolate to get chunky, so remove the bowl from the heat when everything has melted, even if the sugar granules haven't fully dissolved.

Off the heat, whisk in the eggs one at a time, whisking each time to incorporate. The mixture will start to look shiny. Add the dry ingredients, stirring just until they disappear. Add oats and mix just to incorporate. Scoop your cookies (by the tablespoon) onto parchment- or silicone-lined baking sheets, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour, up to several days. Bake at 350 degrees for 11-13 minutes until just done (they’ll still look quite soft when you pull them out). Use a wide spatula to transfer cookies onto a rack, and cool to room temperature.
