All else equal, it’s better to have your keywords or keyphrases (the words people type into Google to find what you’re selling) in your domain name.  To find out what people are searching for, don’t make any assumptions, but rather use the free Google Keyword Tool.  Here’s how:

  1. http://adwords.google.com/keywordplanner  Or just search Google Keyword Planner
  2. You’ll need to login.  You don’t need to spend money on any ads in Google Adwords despite how it may look.
  3. The results will give you a great idea of what searches are more popular than others.  Don’t worry about what the numbers mean; just look at the relative values, for example, “three times as many people search for X as they do for Y.”
  4. Use this info as one factor to consider when picking a domain name and also for what keywords are most important for you when you get to SEO.  (Search Engine Optimization)
